Consistency is Key

Consistency is Key

A lot of people start good habits with good intentions…

They want to lose weight so they join a gym, they want to learn to defend themselves so they join a Martial Arts Class, they want to learn a language so they buy a textbook.

They start… but they don’t achieve their goal. Why?

They expect to see results too quickly!

An overweight person who hasn’t seen their abs in decades joins the gym wanting a 6 pack stomach for their holiday in 6 weeks time… when they don’t get the result in 6 weeks they quit.

Some students join Martial Arts to get a black belt and when they realise this is a lengthy commitment and not something that will happen in 6 months they quit.

People start learning a language and when they realise they cant hold a conversation with a native speaker in that language a few months later they quit.

The key to achieving your goals is CONSISTENCY.

To get a black belt in Martial Arts you need to keep doing the basics every week for years.

To lose that unwanted weight you need to keep putting in the work exercising and eat healthily.

Results will happen but they take time.

People want everything today!

Life is not like this.

Set realistic goals and break them down into bite size chunks.

In Martial Arts that may be focusing on achieving one belt at a time, getting a little bit better each week. If your aim is to be an ultimate fighter in 6 weeks or achieve your black belt in a year you will fail and then end up quitting.

Aim to be 1% better then yesterday!

Consistency gets results.

Those that consistently eat right, exercise regularly will over time be heathier, fitter and happier individuals.

The results may not be obvious in the short term but in the long term they become huge when compared against another who does not do the same things.

Doing small things right consistently is far better then making a huge change for a few weeks and then stopping.

This is why the majority of diets fail. People go ‘all in’ to a new fad for a few weeks expecting amazing results. It is too much too continue with long term and so they stop and then the pain will get to large (or maybe their belly!) and they will start again – yo yo dieters!

More successful people make small changes that they can maintain indefinitely. These compound over time and get huge results in the long term.

In Martial Arts we see it all the time. A student comes in full of enthusiasm, buys all the kits, goes to all the classes for a few months, gets bored, thinks they know it all and then quits and moves onto something else!

On the other hand you have the quiet unassuming student who joins, only goes to one class a week but never misses that class, gets better slowly, never quits and in a a few years time is in a far better place then the student who went all in for a few months and then left.

‘Long term consistency beats short term intensity’

Whatever your goals are, make small bite size changes towards achieving them and then stay consistent. Results will not be immediate but they will come if you trust the process….
